Eschewing both the industrialization of architecture as well as the over-the-top ornateness of Victorian architecture, California Craftsman architecture was born out of the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th century, and sought to fuse simplicity in style and craftsmanship of materials.
California Craftsman architecture is often credited to Pasadena-based architect-brothers Henry and Charles Greene. Later, Frank Lloyd Wright founded the Prairie movement, another offshoot of the Arts and Crafts movement.
California Craftsman homes are typically small to medium in size, with earth-toned exteriors covered in shingles or siding. They are further recognizable by their low-pitched, gabled roofs, with wide eaves covering large (sometimes wraparound) porches supported by chunky, tapered columns.
Other hallmark features include:
exposed beams or coffered ceilings
thick, dark-stained wood trim
built-in cabinetry
