Full of charm and old world flair, Spanish Revival architecture is a callback to traditional Spanish style and subsequent Spanish Colonial style (following Spain’s colonization of the Americas), merged with elements from other architectural styles, which can include Mexican, Moorish, and Mediterranean, amongst others.
The Spanish Revival movement gained traction in the early 20th century following a showcase of designs by architects Bertram Goodhue and Carleton Winslow at the Panama-California Exposition in 1915, and tapered out in the 1930s.
Los Angeles is peppered with Spanish Revival homes in a wide range of sizes, from modest bungalows to sprawling estates, and are recognizable by their red clay tile roofs with low or flat pitch, and stuccoed exteriors (traditionally white).
Other hallmark features include:
arched details
large picture windows
wrought iron accents
central courtyard
coved or barrel ceiliings
exposed wood beams
hand-painted tile
